A Love List of Tender Mercies

Things that are so good for me

There is a huge spread in an old journal of mine that I'd titled, “Things that are so very good for me.” A few years ago I started a practice of naming my “tender mercies” where I listed all the things that made me happy, or that I was full of thanksgiving for. It went along with my “Year of Tender Mercies,” but once the year was over I didn't know how to continue.

Today I'm changing that. I loved the practice of noticing and naming what I loved and what was good for me, even during seasons when life was so hard it felt impossible.

There is the sweetest song I learned when I was a wee little thing. I'm not sure if I picked it up in the Mennonite church we attended at the time, or if I learned it from a Christian hippie group sitting on a hillside in the sun. Nevertheless, it still thrums in my heart, and sometimes I sing it as a prayer:

The Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
The sun and the rain and the apple seed
The Lord is good to me.

What would be on your love list of tender mercies?
